Steve and Andy designed and made The Golden Barge, the animated sculptural centre-piece at the heart of Opal’s Comet.

The visual effect of The Golden Barge was inspired by The Mechanical Galleon, housed in the British Museum, which is an automaton in the form of a 'nef' or ship table ornament. It symbolised The Golden Barge of the Summer Prince. In our myth, the Summer Prince is responsible for stealing the sun away over the horizon, during the mournful winter months. When he returns, so does the sunshine but also hope.

Steve Gumbley worked with Welfare State,  and co- founded IOU Theatre and Inztant Theatre. As a freelance artist he designs and makes theatre sets, kinetic sculptures, and exhibition pieces. He continues to collaborate with other artists and specialist makers, as well as producing his own work.

Andy Plant combines a background of sculpture, engineering, and large transforming theatre sets to create interactive mechanical sculpture.
