Sonya Moorhead is artistic director of Mr. Wilson’s.
Sonya is a performance artist regularly working as a singer, director and writer. Originally from Northern Ireland, Sonya studied at Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre and enjoyed additional training experiences with Teatr Piesn Kozla (Poland) under Gregorz Bral and Christopher Sivertsen, Meyerhold’s Biomechanics with Gennadi Bogdanov and theatre-making process with award winning, Bryony Kimmings.
Based in the North West since 2000, Sonya has developed a diverse professional network of artists, activists, venues, programmers and advocates of outdoor arts.
Sonya’s work has secured the commissioning support and awards from Arts Council England, Arts Council Ireland, The National Theatre, Stockton International Riverside Festival, HOMEMcr, City of London Festival and National Trust.
Alongside her work with Mr. Wilson’s, sonya has performed and created work extensively and learnt from experiences with seasoned outdoor artists such as IOU, Horse and Bamboo, Whalley Range All Stars, Wired Aerial Theatre and Walk the Plank.
In 2017, she was selected by ISAN to attend Fresh Streets, an international seminar on the development of street arts in Porta, Portugal.
Sonya was a Finzi Scholar is 2022, researching Sean-nós singing, unaccompanied traditional Irish vocal music.
As a singer, Sonya collaborates with musicians and musical directors, and features on several soundtracks for theatre shows and film. As the songwriting corner stone of The Greyhounds, Sonya collaborates with pianist John Ellis (Cinematic Orchestra, The Breathe), cellist Sarah Dale (Little Sparrow) and Ian Fletcher (Trad Folk Collective)and Rachael Gladwin (Les Machines de l'ile, Guy Garvey).
