VOODOO RISING

Voodoo Rising- a euphoric spectacle fusion of music, movement and fire.

Conceived by Sonya Moorhead with seasoned experts Walk The Plank , this new collaboration with Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners was in development for 2018.

Drawing upon a rich tapestry of cultural references, Voodoo Rising is a euphoric fusion of music, movement, fire and pyrotechnics inspired by the Louisiana Bayou and hedonism of 90s clubland.

Showcasing a stellar artistic team, this ambitious production is a compelling proposition for co-commissioners and promoters. With festival-goers seeking ever more exciting content, Voodoo Rising satiates the growing thirst for audacious and visceral experiences. Research and development of this project was supported by Arts Council England.

Originally inspired by Kevin Cummins’ iconic photos of Manchester’s legendary Hacienda nightclub, Voodoo Rising likens an inscrutable 90’s warehouse party to the sultry swamplands of the Louisiana Bayou. Our story unfolds in this unique landscape where the spiritual euphoria of voodoo couples the ecstatic energy of 90’s dance music and anarchic, youth culture.

The show explores the parallels between the rituals of nightlife and voodoo’s intricate practices. Our artistic team are also fostering influences from experimental ambient music, voodoo iconography and 90’s print design and fashion. This intriguing mélange of inspirations forms a brand new paracosm, taking audiences on a transcendent adventure into the heightened and communal subculture.
